Exercise - good for mind and body!
Hands up if you can’t always summon up the energy to go to the gym or go for a run after a hard day’s work? That’s all of us then! Don’t you find though, that by the time you’ve done your class, workout or run, you leave the gym feeling sweaty, tired and loads more upbeat?
That’s because when you exert yourself and get your heart rate high up enough to get a bit warm and sweaty, your body releases endorphin's. Endorphin's are found in various parts of the body: the brain, spinal cord and pituitary gland. When we experience an extreme emotion such as pain, endorphin's interact with the receptors in our brain to block the pain and release a positive feeling in the body, much the way morphine might.
You might have heard of gym-goers experiencing an endorphine-rush after exercise and how it can become addictive – now you know why! Exercise is such a great mood-lifter and the best natural anti-depressant and is sometimes included as part of a treatment programme for people who suffer with mild to moderate depression.
So remember to keep your exercise routine going through the cold dark months, whether it’s a gym class, PT session with us here at The Lean Team or a jog in the park. Keep moving, keep the wintry blues at bay and before you know it summer will be here.
